A playful extension creating space, light and long-term flexibility for family living
Located in Canberra's Inner North suburb of Turner, this thoughtfully designed duplex extension transforms a compact three-bedroom home into a spacious and adaptable family residence. Working within the constraints of a challenging triangular block, the design demonstrates how a considered extension and clever reconfiguration can significantly improve functionality without compromising the character of the original home.
The existing lower floor offered limited living space. By extending the home to the rear, the original kitchen and laundry were reimagined as a generous master bedroom, walk-in robe and ensuite, While the original living area becomes a formal parents lounge area. Upstairs, the three existing bedrooms were retained for the children, alongside a dedicated study, allowing the family to remain in the home as their needs evolve.
The unusual site presented a unique design opportunity. With the northern boundary addressing the street and the driveway extending directly towards the rear of the block, a freestanding carport and storage building was positioned at the front of the property. Designed as a lightweight structure that complements rather than dominates the streetscape, it incorporates timber battens that provide privacy to the north-facing dining room while defining a sheltered courtyard and welcoming entry sequence.
The main living space extension responds directly to the geometry of the site. Rather than mimicking the existing dwelling, the new living pavilion meets the original home at a subtle angle, creating a clear architectural transition between old and new while following the skewed side boundary. This design move gives the extension its own identity while making efficient use of the available land and retaining an impressive rear garden space.
Inside, raked ceilings create a wonderful sense of openness within the footprint, while high-level windows draw natural light deep into the living spaces by capturing sunlight above the existing roofline. A vibrant palette of confident colours through the kitchen, paired with beautiful timber flooring, brings warmth, personality and energy to the home.
This Inner North Canberra extension demonstrates how thoughtful residential design can unlock the potential of a constrained site—delivering a light-filled, energy-efficient family home that feels generous, connected and built for many years of comfortable living.
