This typical split-level 1970s Canberra townhouse in Lyneham was originally a modest three-bedroom, one-bathroom home with limited access to natural light. Oriented east–west, the existing layout relied on a single north-facing window to the living room, with a dark and cold kitchen dining space.
The brief was to improve functionality and create a more generous dining space whilst retaining the previously renovated kitchen, and also providing a new master bedroom and ensuite.
Our design response was minimal internal works, with a new rear extension running along the southern boundary, allowing the home to expand without compromising the existing northern light and backyard space.
The extension introduces a larger dining space with a huge picture window to the gorgeous backyard trees, along with a new master bedroom and ensuite designed to enhance privacy and comfort. A large, private elevated deck was positioned between the original lounge and this new dining space, tying these areas together and encouraging a seamless flow out of the home and into the garden.
The original kitchen window was replaced with an arched servery, carefully detailed to match with an existing archway within the home. This curved form was subtly echoed throughout the project — in the tapware selections and the custom-designed balustrade — creating a cohesive architectural language that ties old and new together.
Deep green colour selections and a curated collection of indoor plants draw the garden inside, helping to create a peaceful, tranquil, and personality-filled home that complements and respects the original 1970s design.
