A solar passive knockdown rebuild shaped by slope, light and family living
Located in Duffy, Canberra, this knockdown rebuild replaces an existing dwelling with a contemporary family home designed to respond to a steeply sloping block and maximise northern solar access. Positioned to the southern edge of the site, the home opens to the north, allowing the main living areas to connect directly to the garden and capture winter sun.
The home centres around an open plan kitchen, dining and living space that steps down with the natural fall of the land. From the entry, level changes subtly define each zone—creating separation without compromising flow or connection. This split-level design enhances spatial clarity while maintaining a cohesive, light-filled interior.
The ground floor also includes a flexible home office or guest bedroom and a nearby bathroom, supporting adaptable family living over time.
Upstairs, a secondary family room with a built-in window seat captures elevated views across Canberra. Two children’s bedrooms are positioned to the north, with high-level windows bringing in natural light while maintaining privacy, alongside a well-proportioned main bathroom.
The upper floor form responds directly to site constraints, including slope and solar setback requirements. The angled master bedroom and ensuite are oriented to take advantage of private treetop views, creating a quiet retreat within the home. This distinctive geometry gives the house its architectural identity while ensuring compliance with neighbouring solar access.
This Duffy house demonstrates how a well-designed knockdown rebuild in Canberra can transform a challenging block into a high-performing, solar passive home—balancing energy efficiency, functionality and contemporary family living.
